John McAllister was born in Ballymena. He went to Garron Tower on the Antrim Coast, where he published his first stories and poems in the school magazine. In 1974 he went to Armagh, intending to stay for only two years. He met his future wife in the bank, and still lives there. He has his own accountancy business, two children and a pug called Barnaby.

In 1999, John was awarded an M. Phil. in Creative Writing from Trinity College, Dublin. He is currently the Facilitator of creative writing classes for Counties Cavan and Meath Arts Committees, and joint director of ABC Writers Network.

Writer In Residence


John McAllister was the Leader of the Armagh Writer’s Group from 1999 to 2005. During that time three of his pupils published their own collection of poems and prose. John also edited Hometown (ABC Publishing, 2004) an anthology of local writing.

From 2005 until 2007 John was the writer in residence at the Millennium Court Arts Centre in Portadown .

From 2007 to 2008 John was the Facilitator of the creative writing classes run jointly by Meath & Cavan Arts Committees. Also the Creative Writer for Monaghan County Library.
